I see that the Parkway is closed http://www.nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/roadclosures.htm If we go northwest from Hickory, what's your favorite roads that would eventually take us towards Asheville?

Without the segment of the parkway, we are kind of limited.  We could go up 181 and back down 226A or 80 since that part of the parkway is still open.  We could also get off in Old Fort and take Old Fort Rd to 9 which goes to Lake Lure and 74A.

It would look something like this:

Looks like a pretty good route and around 4 hours driving time.  We could add in some roads around Little Switzerland if the weather is nice.

Yeah I think it should work pretty well.  There are some good photo op spots on the parkway too.

That works for me.....that's not far at all from my house (my old apartments were even closer).  And when you say gas station....I assume you mean the Cashions that's right there as you come off the northbound exit ramp?

correct.

OK everybody, I am going to start updating the first post with details so we don't need to keep weeding through this thread to pick things out.

Bob - how long would you say it takes to get from Lake Norman to the Burger King by you?

Probably 40 minutes or so depending on if you take 73 to 16 or 77 to 40.  It's shorter distance wise taking 73 to 16, but 77 to 40 will allow you to make up some extra time if you're running late as usual Smiley

Don't do the back roads on Saturday morning.   nono Those folk around Statesville, Troutman and Mooresville don't get in any hurry.

I guess I need to go ahead and schedule my reservation. I guess with only 3 overnighters, there's no point in asking for a discount.

Not yet. I'll have 'em up today. I'm still kind of watching the weather. Early indications are that we should be good.

Hold off just a bit. We shouldn't have any problems getting rooms this time of year.

Yes, let's make sure the rain is out of here before we set a meeting time.  And with just 3 of us staying over, we can look around and decide when we get there if need be.

Well I'm hoping we'll have some time to tramp about the shops before the hooligans arrive.  Wink
