Incidentally, I agree - I think we should skip Deal's Gap.  Far too much police presence, far too much traffic... there are WAY better roads that have far fewer hassles.

I'm free the weekend of the 15th and would do an overnight or a 1 day.  Either way I will be in.

How about something in Blowing Rock? http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=blowing+rock+hotels  The Inns are nice, restaurants abundant and plenty of neat shops to entertain the ladies.  We could plan a mid morning meet somewhere around Statesville, do a couple hour drive and have time for kicking around Blowing Rock before dinner.

I'm reluctant to include the Blue Ridge in our plans because they close it so quickly if weather threatens.

Or, we could do Lake Lure, Bat Cave. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Lake+Lure+hotels  Again, good hotels, not so sure about restaurants, but plenty of good roads and other things to do once we get there.

How about Sylva, NC? It's about halfway between Robbinsville and Asheville.

I drove through it from a Dragon Run last year and it looked like a charming little town. If you google map it, there are many interesting roads nearby.

(I've been to Blowing Rock, Asheville, Dragon a few times already. Trying to suggest something new.)

I'm thinking blowing rock just because we know what there is to do there. Anybody stayed in any of the hotels / B&B's there?

I'm up for trying something new.  The very western part of the parkway is beautiful too, plus 28 is nearby, which is always fun.

Some thoughts:

1)  The parkway is tricky.  If they determine we have an organized group driving on it, we need a permit.  I know it sounds silly, but a friend of mine just did a drive up there and toe cops decided to impound five or six cars.  Considering there are so many great roads that have nothing to do with the parkway, I'd skip it.

2)  Lake Lure is small but stunning.  Very pretty, some lovely inns and charming little cafes and restaurants, and great roads running into and out of it.

3)  Sylva is lovely, as is Dillsboro.  Tiny, but cute.

4)  Blowing Rock is a great little burg, but the roads are a lot more limiting, so the drive won't be as nice.

That is some good input.  I think as long as we behave oursevles on the parkway we wont have to worry about law enforcement.  If we're going 100 MPH and people call and complain, then I wouldn't be surprised if Park Rangers decided to enforce some obscure law.  Going west gives us a better choice of roads compared to Blowing Rock.  221 is pretty fun and close to blowing rock, but aside from that the options are a little slim.  We could always go up to Tennessee and run 421 and a couple of the roads near it (a little over an hour from BR).

(I'll apologize to Bob and Mike in advance for repeating myself), but always remember the Blue Ridge Parkway is Federal property. Typical fines are $1500. And if you're entertaining the notion of contesting a ticket, you have to go to Federal court.  The parkway is nice for a scenic drive but not the place for hoonage. Although for this time of year, due to the sheer number leaf-lookers you'll be lucky to hit the speed limit.

That said, a senior 911 friend of mine was pulled over in Blowing Rock by a park ranger. bat

Lake Lure area or Blowing Rock would be good.

For an overnight stay the Pisgah Inn is really cool, but that is further west.

Also something to consider, mid November on the western part of the Parkway is always "iffy".  They have already had snow in the mountains and the Parkway is the first place to close.

I'll cast my vote for Lake Lure for all the aforementioned reasons.  The roads around there are fantastic and since we aren't going until Nov 15, all of the leaves are gone as are the leaf lookers.  There are neat shops at Bat Cave and plenty of places to eat.
