How many were made total?  Any idea why that would be a rare color?

Between 1976 and 2004 there were 10676 Esprit's produced. There were 1483 V8 engined Esprit's built between '96 and  '04 and only 102 made in 2001. I think the color is rare because it was a special order item. I think most people that ordered their cars new probably went for the straight black.
