So I started the car today for the first time since the "Spur" and let it idle for about 10 minutes. The outside of the turbine housing started smoking. It didn't quite smell like oil or coolant though. I let it cool, washed it, and took it for a spirited drive....no smoke at all. Could I have a really slow oil leak? Could a bug or something have decided to call the manifold home?
If you can damage/destroy a turbo, I've done it, but I've never seen the outside of a turbo smoke with zero smoke in the exhaust. Where the hell could the leak be if there's no smoke in the exhaust? All of the turbine oil seals are inside the turbo...I'll put this one up on the lotusesprit forum as well, but I thought I'd check local knowledge first.

That's a new one on me. On the plus side, at least you can see your turbo!

Well, it's an oil leak, most like from the cam cover gasket. I'll order a new gasket Monday and try to have it fixed up before next weekend. The car goes chernobyl when I start it now so I'm not sure I'll be up for driving to Charlotte if I can't get it cleaned up.

Understandable. Even if you don't get it fixed, feel free to come down in the daily driver. I may well be in mine

Ya'll are gonna look like a cuban flotilla instead of an exotic car club.. a Lincoln, a Toyota, ... anybody bringing their pick up truck? (I can brag for a minute now that my idiot light is in the "off" mode and my turn signal are working)

HEY! We will look like a very expensive cuban flotilla if it happens Plus, if the Lincoln actually starts (and runs), it is pretty quick and.... since it looks like you guys are gonna be no shows, I can say with some authority that my Lincoln is faster than your Lotus [/runs and hides]

I'm just hedging. We've been gone every weekend for the past 2 months. I need to make sure I'm not pushing my luck before I committ.

Well, if it is the cam cover seal and if I can get one from Lotus of Durham this week, then life is good. If it is the cam end seal, it will be down to the wire. The cam cover is a 5 minute job, but the cam end is a 3 hour job. Given that this is a Lotus, which do you think it will be?

Okay, new gaskets are on the way from JAE. I paid for 3 day shipping so I should be able to do the job Friday night. If anybody is bored, they're more than welcome to help as I battle Lotus engineering.

I think I have to stay home and feed the goldfish that day. Actually, I normally enjoy helping out with that kind of thing. With any luck this Friday I will be picking up my own car though.
